AML & Identity Verification

Helping Protect You and Your Property Transaction

From 1 July 2026, Australian conveyancers are required to comply with the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing Act 2006 (AML/CTF Act).

These new requirements are designed to help prevent identity theft, property fraud, money laundering and other financial crime.

As part of these obligations, Atkins Conveyancing Services may ask you to provide additional information during the course of your conveyancing transaction.

What Does This Mean for You?

For most clients, very little will change.

You may simply notice that we ask a few additional questions or request some additional information before proceeding with your transaction.

These requirements are now part of Australian law and apply to conveyancing practices across Australia.

Identity Verification

We are required to verify the identity of our clients before completing certain property transactions.

Depending on your circumstances, identity verification may be completed:

  • Face-to-face at our office;
  • Electronically using an approved identity verification provider; or
  • By another method permitted by law.

We will advise you which option is appropriate for your transaction.

Anti-Money Laundering (AML) Checks

As part of our legal obligations, we may also:

  • ask you to complete a short AML Declaration;
  • undertake Politically Exposed Person (PEP) screening;
  • undertake sanctions screening;
  • ask additional questions regarding companies, trusts or other entities;
  • request additional information where required by law.

These enquiries form part of our customer due diligence obligations.

Why Are We Asking These Questions?

These requirements help protect:

  • you;
  • your property transaction;
  • the Australian financial system; and
  • the wider community.

They are designed to reduce identity theft, fraud, money laundering and terrorism financing.

Most clients will simply complete a few additional questions during the onboarding process.

Will This Delay My Settlement?

Our aim is to complete these requirements as early as practical so they do not affect your settlement timetable.

Providing requested information promptly will assist us in progressing your matter as efficiently as possible.

Protecting Your Privacy

Any personal information collected as part of our AML/CTF obligations is handled in accordance with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and our Privacy Policy.

Information is collected only where required to provide our services or comply with our legal obligations.
